"You must not just know logically what you'll lose if you fail and what you'll get if you succeed… Because staying with your duties till the end requires a continual laser-like focus on where you need to keep going and stay on task."
-Mike Brescia

"Because It's There"
George Herbert Leigh Mallory
(June 18, 1886 – June 8/June 9, 1924) was an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s. On the third expedition, in June 1924, Mallory and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine both disappeared somewhere high on the North-East ridge during their attempt to make the first ascent of the world's highest mountain. The pair's last known sighting was only a few hundred meters from the summit. Mallory's ultimate fate was unknown for 75 years, until his body was finally discovered in 1999. Whether or not they reached the summit before they died remains a subject of speculation and continuing research.
Mallory is famously quoted as having replied to the question "Why do you want to climb Mt. Everest?" with the retort: "Because it's there"
I first read that when I was in 7th grade and immediately I knew, even then, what Mr. Mallory meant by that. There are some things in this life, and it's completely different for each person, that we simply just have to do. Whether it's Mt. Everest, competing in a certain competition or becoming the very best at your chosen profession. Whatever your goal in this life is, go get it. Some may ask. why on Earth are you doing this (whatever it may be), simply look them right in the eyes and say "because it's there".
